Ariva understands that finding the right school for your child is one of the most important factors when relocating with your family. We asked top school placement consultants about concerns that arise when moving to a new school. What should be considered as you find the best fit school for your child? We spoke with Elizabeth Sawyer, CEO of Bennett. She recommends that before you even start looking, you must “be oriented to the system overall”. For example, if a family is relocating from overseas, it is important to be familiar with the differences between the two educational tracks. The U.S. tends to be a more forgiving system. K-12 includes everyone. Countries like the UK rely on tests that determine a child’s educational or vocational path. Elizabeth suggests, “Wherever you are coming from, that is your reference point” as you compare schools.
Finding the best fit school for your child is even more challenging if you have a child with a language difference or learning disabilities. The most comprehensive education for children with learning disabilities or with a language barrier is generally at a public school. Each school is required to provide free and appropriate public education (FAPE). Do your homework and learn the differences between the schools and support systems available to find the best fit for your child. Excellent services are offered at both public and private schools.
The most important thing to keep in mind is thinking long term. As a parent, you must consider who your child is now, and who they are becoming. Have a repatriation plan if it is an international move. Moving within the U.S.? It is important to choose a school with a similar curriculum and educational track. Consider the AP classes and prerequisites offered. A school may be strong in one area such as STEM curriculum or sports, but lack other resources for your child. All academic, emotional, and extra-curricular opportunities must be factored into the decision.
